Runway Cycling 2005

Dark clouds were threatening to rain at the 10th anniversary of the annual Runway Cycling (and skating) this year, but that didn't stop over a thousand cyclists and skaters from turning up at the flag off point this Sunday morning.

It was an exciting flag off as cyclists and skaters both enjoyed the freedom of skating on the airport runway. Despite the sudden downpour in the morning, there was a general festive atmosphere that remained throughout the day as the weather cleared out and both cyclists and skaters took to skating on the runway again!

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: 11 June
Arrival Perth at night. Coach pick up for transfer to check in hotel in the city.

Day 2: 12 June
After breakfast, proceed to Fremantle city. Visit Fremantle Monument Hill,  Fremantle Town Hall, Round House and  Fremantle Weekend market. After lunch in Fremantle, enjoy skating from City Beach to Scarborough beach ( 5Km) and on to Hillary's Marina (10 Km) (Total 15 Km) before coach pick up for transfer to Orchard Glory farm for 2 night stay. Upon arrival and check in at the farm, 
embark on farm activities such as farm tour and vineyard tour.  Dinner at the farm. (B/L/D)    

Day 3 : 13 June
After breakfast, proceed to Skating Park in Bindoon near the farm. Alternatively, optional tours(own expense) are available to Gravity Discovery Centre or Southern Cross Cosmos Centre or visit New Norcia, a Monastic town founded in 1846. Return to farm for lunch and thereafter, group can continue farm activities such as fruit  picking and tasting, fishing and animals feeding. Just before dinner, enjoy story telling on aborigines life and culture. You can try your hand on the boomerang throwing and blow the Digeridoo.(Self cook B/L/D) 

Day 4 : 14 June
After breakfast, check out of farm and bid farewell to the farm hosts. Return to Perth for hotel check in . Thereafter to riverside for scenic skating (Option of 10 Km/20Km skate). After lunch (own expense), free at your own leisure to do shopping in the city shopping mall. (Self-cook B/D)   Or MORE skating around Burswood &/ or East  Perth

Day 5 : 15 June
After breakfast and check out of hotel, proceed for Perth city tour. Visit Kings Park ,Lake Monger and drive pass Bell Tower. Skate  from foot 
of Kings Park @ Mounts Bay Road, pass the old Swan Brewery and back to Narrows Bridge.
After lunch(own expense),
continue your shopping until airport transfer for departure. (B)
 

Skateline Bishan Park Officially Opened! 2005 April 24

Skateline Bishan Park is officially opened! We are pleased to present Singapore's largest private outdoor skating rink, bike rental kiosk and cafe all rolled into one outlet!

Heartland SkatePark : A brief History
Skateline has in fact been managing the Bishan skate park since 2002. At the time, it was an aggressive skate park featuring wooden ramps for the local aggressive community. In a move to serve more skaters, the aging ramps were taken apart in 2003 to make way for a fully flat and open skating rink. The park immediately saw a dramatic jump in usage, from scores of aggressive skaters every weekend to hundreds of begginner skaters within weeks. The park became the most active learner venue for new inline skaters. At the time, Skateline occupied just one third of the space at the facility, sharing space with the bike rental business and a cafe. Skateline recognised that integrated operations between the skate, bike and cafe will make operations smoother and realise the full potential of the venue. In late 2004, a successful tender was made to the National Parks Board to run the entire facility (skate, bike and cafe). This allowed a redesign of the floorspace, doubling the retail space and bringing the cafe location right next to the park track. Now Skateline Bishan Park is the island's only private outdoor skating rink, and the only integrated bike/skate/cafe venue serving park goers in central Singapore.[]

Guests arrive in time for the official opening at 1pm ,with the release of Skateline's orange balloons! Guests were immediately treated to an opening demonstration of the Essboard, an on-land surfboard, by Essboard experts. This was followed by a slalom demonstration by special guests, a local slalom trio Wenlong, Ivan and Wenling. The trio demonstrated basic to advance slalom moves, graceful and sometimes seemingly impossible swirl of limbs around cones.

Shortly after the slalom demonstration, showers with thunder came at about 2pm, driving participants to seek shelter in the cafe, bike retail kiosk and skate retail shop. The rain however does not dampen the carnival mood,most guests waited the rain out, either but chatting with other guests or checking out the special offers in the skate shop. Fortunately the cloulds moved on in time for the mid-afternoon program, the urban skate, the free Inline Funstart lessons and the Safe Skating Clinic by the Skate Assist Volunteers.

The first round of lucky draw at 3pm saw 25 lucky guests win a pair of brand new inline skates each. By mid-afternoon juniors were sprawled around Bishan park putting their color pencils to paper in the kid's coloring contest, and scores of beginners were on the concrete learning skating for the very first time.

Instructors and Skate Assist Volunteers accompanied skaters participanting in the urbans skate for a cruise along the Kallang canal. Skaters went beyond Bishan Park along the edge of Toa Payoh all the way to Potong Pasir estate before turning back.

Skaters who were interested in inline hockey had the opporunity to try-out the game first hand, shooting pucks into nets tended by hockey players who were there to share the sport with new skaters.

At 6pm guests gathered for the prize giving for the winning entries to the kid's coloring contest and winning teams of the Treasure Hunt. Another 25 lucky winners took home a new pair of skates!

The carnival was brought to a close by the director of Skateline Felix Yeo, who in his closing speech challenges all skaters to pursue their own dreams, just like Skateline had done with the launch of Bishan Park. We look forward to seeing you in the park![]

Always wanted to skate on the roads? Soon you can! On 23 May, the roads of Marina South will be closed exclusively for skaters! Join Singapore's First Ever Road-Skate! For the first time ever, the entire carriageway (all vehicle lanes in both directions) will be reserved for skaters only from 7am to 9.am. Bring all your skating friends and family for this road skate!

Helmet rentals are available to registered participants on a first-come-first-serve basis by pre-booking only.

Event Entry Pass: Sticker Bib
Upon registration and payment, participants will be issued an Bib Exchange Voucher. The voucher must be presented on the event day in exchange for the official event sticker-Bib, which serves as the entry pass. Only participants with the official event sticker Bib will be admitted.
Important : Lost, stolen or damaged reciepts or Sticker-Bibs will not be replaced.

Getting There
Skaters should arrive by MRT at Marina MRT station, and proceed to Carpark A (beside Planet Marina) on foot or on-skates. To be sure you are in time for the flag off and bib-exchange, you should plan to reach Marina South MRT by 7am. It takes about 15 minutes to move from the MRT station to the Start point.

Parking:
Drivers must enter Marina South and park BEFORE road closure at 7.am, roads will re-open at 9.30am. Parking is only available at Carparks listed on the route map (see route map). For the safety of skaters and to avoid congestion, drivers are discouraged from driving to this event. Drivers are encouraged to 'Park and Ride" : park at a carpark at the next nearest MRT station and arrive by MRT.

About SkateAid
SkateAid is a community project organised by the Salvation Army Youth Development Centre and Skateline. SkateAid brings together inline skaters from all over the island for a special mass-skate. For the very first time in Singapore, public roads on a scenic route will be closed for the sole enjoyment of skaters.The event serves also to highlight the growth possibilities of inline skating as a sport for friends and families, and for all ages and abilities. We also take the opportunity to spread the message of the CNB to youths: Choose to live a healthy and drug-free life with outdoor activities.

French Freestyle Slalom Champion Whirls Through Skateline Bishan Park

Former Freestyle Slalomm champion Sebestien Laffargue wowwed skaters and park-goers with his tricks at Bishan Park on Sunday (5.30pm, April 17). Sebastien has a long string of slalom titles under his belt, most recently first place for the men's FreeStyle Slalom at the Lugdunum contest last October in Lyon (France). His name is often found on the top spots of freestyle slalom competitions across Europe from Switzerland to The Netherlands. The well travelled slalom elite has travelled many countries in Europe and Asia to showcase his skills and promote the growth of the discipline.

On this special appearance at Bishan Park made possible by vice president Eddie Chua of INSSAS, Sebastien demonstrated freestyle slalom and speed slalom moves, plus a bonus showcase of special ways of stopping, many of which are seen for the first time in Singapore. Sebastien was wearing his specialised MX brand skates, which are specifically designed for slalom. The skate has been developed over a year with direct consultation from Sebastien, who feels that current freestyle skates on the market still has technical limitations for slalom. The MX features a rare diagonal strap across the widest part of the foot, as well as very stiff boot base more akin to speed skates than fitness recreation skates. The frame mounting also caters to seven different positions for mounting for exact positioning. The MX skate or its variants are expected to debut in Singapore before the mid of this year.

Sebastien's tour of Singapore is part of promotional activities in Singapore's bid to host the slalom world cup competition here. It is understood that negotiations are still underway between the local associations and the competition organisers. Slalom enthusiasts should start practicing early while hoping for a positive outcome! [Ed]

Youth Sport Roadshow Mar 12 & 13 @ Atrium at the Orchard (Plaza Singapura)

An exciting gathering of actions sports gave weekend city goers at Dhoby Gaut a good overview of the scene in Singapore. Targeted at youths, the Youth Sports Roadshow, organised by Avivar brought together exciting sports with strong youth appeal like wushu, wakeboarding, frisbee, contact rugby and of course inline skating. Exhibitors were a good mix of independent businesses and associations. Contact rubgy, for example, was well represented by the Singapore Rugby Union, the local National Sports Association (NSA) for rugby. On the other end, virtually non-commercial Ultimate Frisbee was represented by its core group of enthusiasts. The heat of the urban afternoon was made interesting with sports displays sprinkled through the day. The Atrium at Orchard, or the open space in-front of Plaza Singapura offered ample space for all demos. Besides telling visitors about inline skating and giving away complimentary skate lessons, Skateline brought on an exciting display of Slalom skating though slalom enthusiasts Ivan, Wenling and Longwen. They wowed the crowd with technical footwork despite the difficult surface on stage. It was also a field day for Skateline customers who took advantage of the attractive "Skate Explosion" special offer. [Ed]

Upcoming Inline Events in Korea : SWIC & JARSC

Spring season in Korea is also skating season, with some of the biggest inline events in the world. The two upcoming events are a must-join for many skate enthusiasts around the globe.

Seoul World Inline Cup 2005 (SWIC)
Date : 2005 April 10
Location : Seoul, Jamsil Sports Complex

A very high profile inline marathon event which sees participation from the top inline athletes in the world. Take part in either the competitive 42 km full marathon or the 20km half marathon for fitness skaters. Skaters have to be able to complete the full marathon in 90 minutes and the half marathon in 80 minutes!

11th Asian Roller Skating Championships, Jeonju (JARSC)
Dates : 2005 May 10 - 14
Location : Jeonju, Korea

An FIRS sanctioned event in the cultural city of Jeonju in southwestern Korea. Jeonju is famous for Bibimbap and its world class sports facilities. JARSC includes the entire range of events : speed, hockey and artistic, held in the Jeonju skating rink. More details at official JARSC website : www.jarsc.com

Pledge Your Support! Charity Bike 'N' Blade 2005

Congratulations to the safe and successful return of the 40 cyclists and 16 skaters from Charity Bike and Blade. On 12 to 15 March, they made a journey of more than 400km journey from Singapore to Desaru and back. Organised by (Organised by the Saint Andrew's Mission Hospital (SAMH) and Avanade, The Charity Bike and Blade (BNB) is in support of the Saint Andrew's Mission Hospital (SAMH).

Below : The expedition was done over 4 days, the first day from SAMH to Mersing (150km), the second from Mersing to Desaru (150 km). After a day of rest at Desaru, the fourth day was the return trip (120km). (Map from event website)

The skate team was made up of 16 skaters, including skaters from 3 local teams (Team Hvper, Team Speed Virus(TSV), Team Skateline) and 4 foriegn skaters well known to the skate community here.It is truely a skate of solidarity amongst skaters.

The 400 km journey was divided into 3 legs, one leg per day. Each leg, between 120 to 150 km, was divided into 4 relays, each relay skated by one group. The 16 skaters divided themselves into 4 groups, namely the foriegn skater group, Team Speed Virus, Team Hvper and the 'junior' group, a mixture of the younger skaters from different teams. Each group will skate one relay each day, between 30 to 40 km. Due to the natural difference in average speed, skaters and cyclists moved in seperate convoys, each escorted by a front and back vehicle. The vehicles carried the team which was going to skate next and the team which had finished their leg.

The route was known to be hot, hilly, rough and busy at times. Skaters endured the full extent of the day's heat, often radiated off the sun-baked tarmac. Most skaters carried water in back-pouches and drank continuously to stay hydrated. The route snaked through forest and plantations, with continuous hills of varying gradient. Long climbs rewarded with long rolls only into another climb again. Some stretches saw heavy over-taking traffic. Often, cars and trucks horned in support, drivers waved, the mood of the motorists were generally positive. Once in a while, the skaters tore through teeth-chattering rough surfaces. The old tarmac had been weathered by rain and battered by heavy traffic. The road got progressively more difficult as the days went on,with tougher climbs and rougher roads.

Above : riders standing-by for the start of a leg. The journey was accompanied by crew, including a doctor, and family of the participants. There were some accidents but injuries were quickly attended to by the doctor. Overall, the organisation was safe and well thought.

The final skate leg was completed by the 'foriegn group' (Maxim, Sandy and Jonathan). This leg was shorter and somewhat flatter because the convoy has left the hills behind and was nearing the coast. Sandy Snakenberg (Team Skateline) recalls a memorable moment during the four day journey. "We just finished our skate and arrived at the end point, everyone was sweating and absolutely thirsty. Then these children, from the families of the participants, brought glasses of ice-cold water and started giving them out to everyone......Thats sweet.". [Ed]
